* * *

THERE WERE TOO many things circling around in his brain. That was what Henry would blame this on. Too many thoughts. Too many feelings. Comforting Sarabeth had messed with him somehow. Messed with everything.

And now Jessie was standing here and he could see it on her face. The guilt and the worry and that little hitch of...clearly not feeling good enough. When he’d watched her. Hug her daughter, ease her into bed, sing songs and just shower her with love.

She hadn’t demanded answers, and he knew she wanted them. She hadn’t scolded or tried to do anything but comfort.

He couldn’t stand the thought she might not know that was the mark of a mother. Care and comfort over her own wants. That she would let guilt and everything that had happened that wasn’t Jessie’s fault cloud the very basic fact she was a good mom. The best mom.

And it shouldn’t feel good that she’d said he gave a good pep talk. It shouldn’t feel good, her arm under his hands. Strong and tough, but still soft. He shouldn’t want to or need to comfort her or touch her or talk to her.

He shouldn’t notice her mouth, study it. He shouldn’t want to...

He released her. Probably abruptly. “I’ll go grab Landon or Hazeleigh.” And then he escaped. Like a coward.

But what the hell was wrong with him anyway?

Thinking about kissing her in the middle of all this. He was an idiot. Warped. Yeah, he knew that. He’d always known that. Usually he left vulnerable moms and their good kids out of it.

Clearly there was something about helping a woman that made a guy think there was something romantic there when, ha ha ha, like romantic was something he’d ever been involved in. He wasn’t Jake or Landon or even Brody. Somehow they’d turned these types of situations into something...

Domestic. Jake and Zara were getting married. Hazeleigh and Landon had settled into that little cabin and lived together like an old married couple. Brody and Kate took care of everyone in the house like they were the parents of the group.

All because they’d been thrown into some danger together. Like that just...forged some kind of bond. Like a few bullets flying made love sprout into existence.

He wished he didn’t believe his brothers were in love, whatever that meant. But he saw them all. The way they were with each other. It wasn’t all lovey-dovey looks and touches. It was arguments and makeups. It was casual gestures. The way Jake would slide his hand down Zara’s ponytail—the way she’d waited on him when he’d been recovering from his gunshot wound when he was pretty sure Zara Hart waited on no one ever.

It was the way Brody and Kate made meals together like it was a dance, and Landon and Hazeleigh looked at each other with knowing smiles like they could read each other’s thoughts.

And none of this had to do with him and Jessie because wanting to kiss her was just...basic chemistry.
